Do you have a condition that Doctors have labeled as stress related?
Do you have trouble breathing?
Do you live too much in your head?
Do you feel persistent tension and stress?
Do you have trouble grounding or centering yourself?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you can be helped by my extensive training in bioenergetic analysis.
Bioenergetic Analysis, pioneered by Alexander Lowen and John Pierrakos, was one of the first disciplines to combine body and energy work with psychotherapy. We live in a dualistic society which constantly asks us to separate mind from body. However, as we grow, our bodies as well as our minds and our emotions are affected by the stresses that we experience. To cope with stressful situations, we create body armor as well as psychological defenses. While the armor once served us in difficult circumstances and has been like a friend, it becomes limiting and confining as we age, even to the point of being destructive. It limits our energy for life and we react to new situations with the old habits of defenses and body armoring. Behind the armor is our “true self,” the self that reacts spontaneously and naturally to situations, whose energy is free for present day life, the self that feels connected to the whole of body, mind, heart and spirit, the self that lives “in the zone.” By using the concepts and techniques of bioenergetic work, I can help you heal the arbitrary separation between your mind and body and reduce the body armor you carry, thus freeing your energy for the present moment. Bioenergetics is not just a body work; it involves deepening awareness and cognitive understanding.
Every one of my clients benefits from my work and study in bioenergetic analysis. People often come I the door with bodily discomforts such as headaches or backaches. Some express that they feel like a walking head and are unaware of any sensations below the neck. Some are having trouble standing up for themselves in a relationship. Some have anger that has been bottled up for years. Some have postural difficulties. Many are afraid of their bodies. Some are athletes, but may be locked into a rigid body structure. Some choose me as a therapist because they know of my bioenergetic work or that the key to their own healing is through their body. Most are not breathing well. Even when a client does not want to do active “bodywork,” s/he benefits from my observations of his/her body armoring and from the emphasis I place on full and easy breathing. One of my teachers has said, “Breathing is the key to Life,” and my experience supports this as a truth. The more fully we can breathe, the more fully alive we can be. In sum, bioenergetics can be used simply and quickly to develop strategies to become more aware of our body in the present and to relieve stress. And, it can be used for deep, transformative work helping us to release pain, heal emotional wounds and change our body structure.

For myself, I could not have made my own life changing transformations without access to this work.
Your sense of safety is of prime importance to me. I may ask you if you want to work with your body. You always have the right to say no. My intention is to work with you and not force something upon you. At first, it is common that people find it uncomfortable to focus on their body in psychotherapy. This discomfort usually passes quickly, when a person feels involved in the work. I never ask anyone to do something that I have not experienced my self. Bioenergetic training includes 1000 hours of personal bioenergetic work. Getting your full consent is of prime importance, so I will not push you to do something you don’t want to do. In summary, any one who works with me will benefit from Bioenergetic Analysis, whether you are ready for active body work or not. The more openness you have to using bodywork, the more of my knowledge I can share.
I am a Certified Bioenergtic Therapist (CBT) and began my training in 1976. The training I received at the Michigan Society of Bioenergetics was very thorough. Along with the 1000 hours of personal bioenergetic work required, we received 5 years of bioenergetic training and supervision. I continue in yearly post graduate trainings and supervision weekends.
